Shamrock’n Half Marathon Round 2 Training Update

4 days until my 4th half marathon! …This is seriously the last thing I ever thought I’d be blogging about when I first started blogging and had to ask my readers whether they thought I could possibly train for a 3 mile run.

As of now, I’m feeling pretty prepared…and a little like I just want to get it over with, to be honest 😉 But that could be because on Monday morning after race day, we’re leaving for Maui! I can see it now…I finish the race, devour a delicious brunch, treat myself to a much needed pedicure, then wake up the next morning and slide my pedicured toesies into some flippy floppys, get on a plane, and head to the beach!

Anyway, when I last checked in, I had two general goals for my last month or so of training.

  1. Keep on track (obvi :) ) and
  2. Make a conscious effort to get to sleep earlier during the week so that I’m rested enough to wake up on time and get more than 3 miles in.

Let’s see how I did, shall we?

October Running Goals

Hello blog world! Long time no talk.

I think it is the lamest thing ever to lead into a blog post by talking about the weather, but here I go: Can I just complain for a moment that we are nearly halfway through October, and yet this is the weather forecast for the next 10 days?!

Weather

It’s only a slight consolation that we’re getting below 60* at night. This time 2 months ago, it was 100* during the day and 75-80* at night, so I guess I can’t complain. But I want to start picking pumpkins and doing fun fall things!!! And my vision for said activities involves crisp fall air, a flannel shirt, jeans and boots…not sweating in an apple orchard in the 85 degree sun wearing a tank top, shorts, and flip flops 😉 Oh well. We will get there eventually!

Anyway…A little over a month ago, I posted my September Running Goals, keeping in mind that my eventual goal is to run a 10K in November and a half marathon in March. I’ve always said that putting your goals on the internet makes you more wayyy more likely to actually stick with them, and this was definitely the case for me last month!

Though I haven’t put them in writing until now, I also have some October goals in mind that I have been working toward this month. And I’ve gotta stick with them, because registration re-opened and I was able to snag a spot in the Beat the Blerch 10K on November 14th! Continue reading

Fitness Friday – Half Marathon Training Check-in #3

It’s crunch time, folks. One week from tomorrow I’ll be running the American River Parkway Half Marathon!

I’m not sure I’ve mentioned it before, but all proceeds of the race will be donated to benefit the American River Parkway, which is is a 23 mile long bike path that winds along the American River here in Sacramento. It is also the path where the race will take place, and it is where I have run pretty much every single one of my long runs, nearly every weekend for the last year and a half.

American River Parkway

Crossing over the American River at Discovery Park around mile 6 is always one of the highlights of my runs!

Check out my first two half marathon training updates here and here to see how far I’ve come in my training plan!

Fitness Friday – Half Marathon Training Check-in #2

Hello all, and welcome to another edition of “Read About How Katie’s Torturing Herself This Week” :) (Also known as my half marathon training check-in)

When I last checked in about 3 weeks ago, I was stoked because I was running far and fast. I was increasing mileage on my long runs faster than I laid out in my training plan, and I had quickly gained back the speed I lost when I didn’t run in January.

You’d think that I’d have learned by now that things don’t quite come that easily without consequence, especially when you couple 15+ miles per week with kickball, softball, gym trips, and riding my bike a mile to and from work every day. Continue reading

Fitness Friday – Half Marathon Training Check-in

Anyone who has known me for a long time or knows me well (I’m looking at you, parents, brother and boyfriend) knows that I get emotional and kind of overreact sometimes.

Moooooom you put my jeans in the dryer! Now they’re gonna be tight and I’ll have to lose 5 pounds to make up for it and I’M A FAT LARD!

I’m really a fun person to be around, I swear 😉

Case in point: this post.

That post was preceded by a 45 minute tear-filled breakdown where I told my saint of a boyfriend that the fact I didn’t run for nearly 3 weeks meant that I would never run the same again and everything was terrible and I was so out of shape and the world is cruel and horrible.

See what I mean?

Well in the past month, I’ve pretty much proven my former self wrong. Apparently when you’ve been running for 4 years, and running longer distances pretty consistently for over a year, 3 weeks isn’t that long of a break. (#humblebrag?) Don’t get me wrong- for the first few weeks it was really hard, and my pace was 30-40 seconds slower per mile than normal. But again, Russell the Saint came through and reminded me that if I got my mileage up, the pace would follow. And evidently, the guy was right. Continue reading

Weekend in Photos

Has anyone else noticed that, as spring approaches, people come out of hibernation and start wanting to actually do things? We’ve been getting some spring weather here and there and I’ve totally noticed my calendar filling up lately. Suddenly, weekends spent binging Netflix on the couch are no more and I actually have to go out and socialize with people 😉

I guess it’s not the worst thing…House of Cards can always wait. (but if any of you spoil Season 3 for me, there’ll be hell to pay!)

Weekend in Photos

Hi all! Just dropping in really quickly to share some snippets of my weekend…for the first time in forever, it seems!

By all accounts, my weekend shouldn’t have been anything to write home about. I left the office early on Friday to head to the Bay Area and prep for a work event which took up my Saturday morning. Oh, it was also raining – HARD – pretty much all weekend. Can’t complain too much though, it was the first rainy spell since December! California really needed it.

Anyway, despite having to work and the presence of rain, it turned out to be a really nice weekend! Continue reading

2015 Fitness Goals

Who says New Years resolutions are for January 1st? They totally still count the first week of February, right? 😛

One thing I have always done a pretty good job of on this blog is setting goals and keeping myself accountable for them. In 2014, I started the year off by giving myself a budget, which was a good way for me to change my spending habits while I was working at my internship. The year before, I made goals to run a 5k and run 25 miles in a month at least once during 2013. I actually ended up running two 10k’s and was registered for my first half marathon by the end of the year.

It’s nice to be able to look back and track progress on your goals…and it’s even nicer to be able to say you beat your goals. 😉

For the past month, I have thought good and hard about my fitness goals for the year…and I have decided I don’t want to be over ambitious, or over specific. I’m keeping it to 2 goals that I think are challenging, achievable, and measurable: Continue reading

Pre-Birthday Weekend in Photos

There are no words to describe the gratitude I’m feeling for my loved ones after this weekend. I think it and say it all the time, but it’s true: I’m the luckiest girl!

My 26th birthday is in a couple of days (yep I’m a baby!), and unlike last year when I had a big ol’ neon themed pub crawl to celebrate early, this year I have been a little more low key about my plans. 26 just doesn’t seem as cool as 25, right? 25 was the last milestone age — now that I can rent a car, what else is left?!

I may not have had anything big on the radar, but I quickly learned on Friday evening that there were other plans in store for my pre-birthday weekend… Continue reading
