My 28th Birthday

This morning, I scanned through my Facebook “On This Day” memories (I deleted Timehop from my phone months ago because of a lack of space and obnoxious number of notifications) and came across last year’s birthday post.

In it, I gushed about how awesome my life was and I linked to birthday posts from the years before: when I turned 26 and had a great weekend with my boyfriend and did a month by month recap from my amazing 26th year…or when I turned 25 and got real introspective about my self-diagnosed quarter life crisis. It’s clear to me that every year I’ve used this blog to reflect on my birthday and remember what it is I’ve accomplished and what I’ve learned after another year. Continue reading

Run Now, Wine Later (3)

Life Lately

Well, hello there! Long time no blog. (4 months to the day, to be exact!)

That is a shocking amount of time to have gone sans blogging, especially considering that I’d been going pretty strong – at least a couple times per month – for the last 5 years.

(OK, real talk, it was 4 months to the day when I originally wrote this post, but it has legit sat in my Drafts pile for a whopping 12 days. Now you guys see what I’m talking about!)

Not too long after my last post, I got a promotion at work. In the months since, it feels like there have been quite a few weeks, and probably even month-long stretches really, where work and my “extra-curricular” life are so hectic that all I want to do when I get home (which is often not til 8pm) is have a glass of wine and veg out on the couch. And you better bet that, given the option, wine always wins 😉 Continue reading

Birthday Week in Photos

I can’t remember the last time I started a blog post with a sentence other than something like, “so this post is a little delayed, but…” Apparently I’ve been busy!

Last Thursday (September 24th) was my birthday! Pretty much every year since I’ve had this blog, I’ve done some sort of birthday post, so I didn’t want to abandon the tradition! For fun you can check out my 25th birthday quarter life crisis (I was nearing the end of a really rough year) and my 26th birthday photo post (a rough year is best followed by a re-building year!).

Age 26 was kind of a weird one for me. It is so strange to me that for an entire year I have had a job that I like, kept up regular exercise (ran 2 half marathons) and a healthy diet with no significant physical ailments (besides my scary bike crash and hospital stay), and am in a healthy loving relationship (with someone whose terrible jokes make me laugh just as much today as they did a year ago).

I guess I just got used to things being wrong.

I definitely still find little things to complain about from time to time, as I’m sure we all do, but overall I am a lucky girl! Case in point: my birthday celebrations lasted a whole week! Read on for more :) Continue reading

Weekend in Photos

Question of the week: Where has the summer gone?

I was reading social media posts this morning saying that some students are going back to school today…What the what?!

We just got over a pretty insane week of 100+ temps (I think we had 3 or 4 days in a row, peaking at 107…yikes) in Northern California, so it still definitely feels like summer here. And this weekend’s activities definitely solidified that feeling!

On Saturday morning, I peeled myself out of bed just in time to make it to a yoga class at my gym. Russell and I have been trying to get “in shape” for an upcoming Lake Tahoe trip. My goal lately has been 2 gym trips and 2 runs during the week…then hope for the best on the weekends ;P I’ve been pretty good about the first part for several weeks now, but for me to actually bust out a decently challenging workout on a Saturday this weekend was a big win for me. Gone are the days of my 10 mile Saturday morning runs, apparently! Continue reading

Treat Yourself Tuesday: Costa Rica Edition

I am excited to be linking up for my first Treat Yourself Tuesday today in a looong time! It’s hosted by my lady Becky, who just had a BABY BOY!!! I’m so excited for her and her husband Kyle, and hope she’s able to treat herself to some sleep today! 😉

Anyway, every Tuesday in this little blogosphere is a day to share how you have treated yourself lately. I love reading through Becky’s post to see what fabulous things people have been doing. She puts it best:

“Do whatever feels best for you. Do something that will make you feel relaxed and loved and happy. Treat yourself well and treat yourself often so that you will become the best you possible and in turn be your best for others in your life!”

treat-yourself-tuesday-badgeWell, today is an especially awesome #TYT for me because I am sharing pictures from my trip to Costa Rica! What could be a better treat than a vacation?

Just less than a week after my half marathon and concussion, Russell and I went to Costa Rica for 8 days and 8 nights. We went to three totally different locations throughout the country:

Four Things

So I’ve been seeing this survey floating around the blogosphere lately, and in the name of laziness and a full week of no posts (and a love of surveys) I am filling it out today. Enjoy!

1. Four names that people call me, other than my real name: (I cheated- my real name is Katherine!)

  • Katie
  • MKG (Mary Katherine Gallagher)
  • Katie Rose
  • Stinky (I’m lookin at you, Russell 😉 )

2. Four jobs I have had:

  • Tour guide/Freshman Orientation Staff at UCSB
  • Intern x 3 (in a legislative office, at a weekly newspaper, and at my current office prior to being hired full-time)
  • YMCA Day Camp Counselor
  • Account Coordinator (current role!)

Giving Thanks

This year, more than most years, I feel like I have a lot to be thankful for.

I remember looking back on 2013, feeling pretty lost, and thinking, “I began this year in a relationship and employed, and I am ending it single and without a job.” Of course, this was a little pessimistic of me, being that I had been hired just before Christmas and scheduled to start my new job mid-January.

I’ve mentioned my feelings about this before, but having hard times really makes you appreciate when things start to go your way. That, plus recent family illness, make it pretty easy for me to identify what I am thankful for this year. Continue reading

Weekend in Photos

Funny story about how I forgot to post this yesterday. Let’s just pretend like Monday didn’t happen (I have a feeling no one will have any complaints about skipping a Monday!) and get on to pictures of my fabulous weekend. K? K.

Most of my weekend was spent in sunny San Diego, which you may know if you follow me on Instagram.

I was there for work, and our only goal when arriving on Thursday night was MEXICAN FOOD. After 4 years in Southern California for college, one of the things I miss the most (besides the ocean, of course) is good Mexican food. We went to Old Town Mexican Cafe in Old Town SD and it was super good, albeit a little touristy. Continue reading

My 26th Year in Photos

Today, I turned 26. This time last year, I wrote about how I was working through what I called my “quarter life crisis”.

During most of 2013, I was deeply unsatisfied with several aspects of my life. Luckily my ongoing health issues started to clear up…But after I ended a relationship which had been unhappy for far too long, I was left facing the fact that I hated my job.

It affected every aspect of my life. I was an administrative assistant at a small, under-performing lobbying firm, and I felt underutilized, like my brain was stagnating. To make matters worse, I had a supervisor who knew I didn’t want to be there — and didn’t want me there either.

In what should have been an extremely difficult period, I spent approximately 10 weeks unemployed. But unlike my unemployed post-college phase, this was about opportunity and carving my own path. I created endless To-Do lists, interviewed for several positions, worked at Macy’s for 2 days (ha), and began training for my first half marathon.

On January 15th, I began my new job — a full-time, paid, 6-month internship at a well-respected public affairs firm. 9 months later, I have grown, gotten a contract extension, learned, failed, succeeded, and last month I was offered a full-time position with the firm. I could not be happier about where I landed.

I’m very aware of the fact that none of my successes of the last year would mean nearly as much if they didn’t happen after epic failures. Having a job I love means so much more knowing firsthand how miserable it is to dread going to work every day. Being in a healthy, functioning relationship feels so much better knowing how emotionally draining a dysfunctional one can be.

I am 100% certain that I have created my own happiness this year. And it’s all because I’ve lived by the philosophy I described in last year’s birthday post: Do what makes you happy. Don’t do what is safe. Don’t do what is expected of you. Hell, don’t even do what’s responsible. Do what will bring you satisfaction, be it temporary or long-lasting.

My original intent was to post a photo from each month of my 26th year…I narrowed it down to about 15. Enjoy! Continue reading

Pre-Birthday Weekend in Photos

There are no words to describe the gratitude I’m feeling for my loved ones after this weekend. I think it and say it all the time, but it’s true: I’m the luckiest girl!

My 26th birthday is in a couple of days (yep I’m a baby!), and unlike last year when I had a big ol’ neon themed pub crawl to celebrate early, this year I have been a little more low key about my plans. 26 just doesn’t seem as cool as 25, right? 25 was the last milestone age — now that I can rent a car, what else is left?!

I may not have had anything big on the radar, but I quickly learned on Friday evening that there were other plans in store for my pre-birthday weekend… Continue reading
