Fall Running Recap + December Goals

Fun story: this post was originally titled “October Running Goals”…and then I wrote 2 sentences and it sat in my drafts for a month. And then I pulled it out in early November, changed the title to November Running Goals, added a couple sentences, then…wrote a post about the election instead.

Despite my attempts, blogging has been difficult to commit to lately. But now that it’s Thanksgiving break and I have plenty of other work-related things I should be catching up on, it seems like no better time to procrastinate my real work and write a blog post!

Is it just me, or is summer just a no-go season for running? Every year for the past three years, I’ve trained for half marathons that happen in the spring and then I promptly stop running more than once a week for at least 3-4 months after that. Continue reading

My 28th Birthday

This morning, I scanned through my Facebook “On This Day” memories (I deleted Timehop from my phone months ago because of a lack of space and obnoxious number of notifications) and came across last year’s birthday post.

In it, I gushed about how awesome my life was and I linked to birthday posts from the years before: when I turned 26 and had a great weekend with my boyfriend and did a month by month recap from my amazing 26th year…or when I turned 25 and got real introspective about my self-diagnosed quarter life crisis. It’s clear to me that every year I’ve used this blog to reflect on my birthday and remember what it is I’ve accomplished and what I’ve learned after another year. Continue reading

Fitness Friday: Sacramento ClassPass Review

Does anyone else out there feel like you only really push yourself while working out if you’ve got someone telling you what to do?

Whenever I work out on my own I’m like, “OK so let’s set a reeeal average goal for the # of sets and the weight I lift so I know I can achieve it and feel totally accomplished afterward.” For the first couple of years that I blogged, I would do a couple sets of bicep curls, some tricep extensions, maybe some lat pulldowns, and call it a day – then flex my baby muscles like they’re something to bat an eyelash at 😉

But when I’m taking a fitness class – or even just using the Nike+ Training Club app to guide me through a workout – I’m at the whim of someone whose goal is to make me do things I hate, but that will make me work harder…like burpees…instead of half-assing some 8 Minute Abs moves that do nothing. Plus, I know it’s not about comparing yourself to others, but no one wants to be the sucker falling behind in class.

Up until now, I’ve been taking a Tabata bootcamp semi regularly at my gym and have tried one or two other boot camp classes, along with Zumba and yoga here and there. After I finished my half marathon last month, I saw that ClassPass was offering a trial membership. Though the full monthly pass is a little pricier than my normal gym membership, I jumped at the chance to expand my fitness horizons at studios around town for a smaller price tag now that I’m no longer on a strict 3 run-per-week schedule! So my friend Shannon and I signed up together for the 2 week trial. Continue reading

Shamrock’n Half Marathon Round 2 – Race Recap

And just like that, I became a member of the (maybe imaginary) elite club (that I just made up) comprised of crazy people who have run 4 half marathons.

Weekend before last, I completed the Shamrock’n Half Marathon for the second time! And then we left for a vacation to Maui the next day. I typed up this recap on the plane ride over to Hawaii while everything was still fresh.

Each time I run a half marathon, I’m reminded how different every race is. I use the same training plan, the distance is still 13.1 miles, but each race really becomes its own unique experience, starting with the first 7+ mile training run all the way till the moment I cross the finish line.

This race was no exception, and in fact, was even more different than any half marathon I’ve ran…thanks to California’s best friend/worst enemy, El Niño. Continue reading

Shamrock’n Half Marathon Round 2 Training Update

4 days until my 4th half marathon! …This is seriously the last thing I ever thought I’d be blogging about when I first started blogging and had to ask my readers whether they thought I could possibly train for a 3 mile run.

As of now, I’m feeling pretty prepared…and a little like I just want to get it over with, to be honest 😉 But that could be because on Monday morning after race day, we’re leaving for Maui! I can see it now…I finish the race, devour a delicious brunch, treat myself to a much needed pedicure, then wake up the next morning and slide my pedicured toesies into some flippy floppys, get on a plane, and head to the beach!

Anyway, when I last checked in, I had two general goals for my last month or so of training.

  1. Keep on track (obvi :) ) and
  2. Make a conscious effort to get to sleep earlier during the week so that I’m rested enough to wake up on time and get more than 3 miles in.

Let’s see how I did, shall we?

Life Lately

Once upon a time, I had a blog that I wrote in regularly. Then I started to slow down…and then I went 2 months without blogging. Whoops!

It’s not that I haven’t thought about it. And I wish I could say that I’ve been too busy changing my life or traveling the world or something of the sort, but the real answer is a little more like: busy with the holidays, and I started binge-watching American Horror Story (starting with Coven and moving on to Freak Show 😛 ) in the evenings instead of blogging. *insert embarrassed emoji here*

That being said, I’m still the same girl that I was in high school (don’t ask me how long ago that was) (OK, it was over 10 years ago)…and that would be the girl who documents and takes pictures of everything. So although I haven’t updated this little bloggity blog since a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving, you bet yer butt I’ve got pictures to get y’all caught up 😉

I have no intention of giving up on my blog…on the contrary, I have plans to run a half marathon in March, and I even got a planner this year (check out Passion Planner!) to step up my To-Do list game, which should give me plenty of blog fodder. But until then…here are some pictures of my Life Lately. Continue reading

Beat The Blerch 10K Race Recap

Has it already been 2 weeks since I updated?! This month has been flying by. I remember back in, like, September planning out  the next couple of months and thinking, “Oh man, November is going to be busy…race weekend, bachelorette, Thanksgiving, wedding…” And then I blinked my eyes and I’m already prepping my liver self for some wine tasting this weekend for a college friend’s bachelorette 😉 (Hi Desene!)

Which means…race weekend has already come and gone! I’ll get into details from my race, which are really kinda fun because it was a much different race than any I’ve ever ran before. But first I wanted to check in on October’s running goals – which I mainly set to keep myself on track for my 10K! Continue reading

October Running Goals

Hello blog world! Long time no talk.

I think it is the lamest thing ever to lead into a blog post by talking about the weather, but here I go: Can I just complain for a moment that we are nearly halfway through October, and yet this is the weather forecast for the next 10 days?!

Weather

It’s only a slight consolation that we’re getting below 60* at night. This time 2 months ago, it was 100* during the day and 75-80* at night, so I guess I can’t complain. But I want to start picking pumpkins and doing fun fall things!!! And my vision for said activities involves crisp fall air, a flannel shirt, jeans and boots…not sweating in an apple orchard in the 85 degree sun wearing a tank top, shorts, and flip flops 😉 Oh well. We will get there eventually!

Anyway…A little over a month ago, I posted my September Running Goals, keeping in mind that my eventual goal is to run a 10K in November and a half marathon in March. I’ve always said that putting your goals on the internet makes you more wayyy more likely to actually stick with them, and this was definitely the case for me last month!

Though I haven’t put them in writing until now, I also have some October goals in mind that I have been working toward this month. And I’ve gotta stick with them, because registration re-opened and I was able to snag a spot in the Beat the Blerch 10K on November 14th! Continue reading

Birthday Week in Photos

I can’t remember the last time I started a blog post with a sentence other than something like, “so this post is a little delayed, but…” Apparently I’ve been busy!

Last Thursday (September 24th) was my birthday! Pretty much every year since I’ve had this blog, I’ve done some sort of birthday post, so I didn’t want to abandon the tradition! For fun you can check out my 25th birthday quarter life crisis (I was nearing the end of a really rough year) and my 26th birthday photo post (a rough year is best followed by a re-building year!).

Age 26 was kind of a weird one for me. It is so strange to me that for an entire year I have had a job that I like, kept up regular exercise (ran 2 half marathons) and a healthy diet with no significant physical ailments (besides my scary bike crash and hospital stay), and am in a healthy loving relationship (with someone whose terrible jokes make me laugh just as much today as they did a year ago).

I guess I just got used to things being wrong.

I definitely still find little things to complain about from time to time, as I’m sure we all do, but overall I am a lucky girl! Case in point: my birthday celebrations lasted a whole week! Read on for more :) Continue reading
